Project Name: FDA Approval Web Portal for Pharmaceutical Product Creation
Business Objective: Perrigo is the largest generic over the counter medicine producer in the US. Generic brands of pain relievers, cough medicines, ear medicines, and many more, are sold in pharmacies such as Walgreens, CVS, and stores all around the US. Since Perrigo produces so many different varieties of drugs, and since the US Food and Drug Administration must approve each one with a very meticulous amount of steps (over 200) for each medicine applying for approval, Perrigo needed a web based portal so its scientists and team from around the globe would be able to track the process from inception to completion.
Solution
Perrigo engaged Harmonic to work on the FDA approval web based portal project as follows:
-
- Architect, design, and implement a new, secure web based portal for Perrigo’s globally dispersed team of scientists, PHDs, and product development teams.
- Cross functional portal touches nearly all departments of Perrigo from product ideation to product development, trials, and ultimately manufacture and launch.
- Portal was developed as a highly customized Microsoft SharePoint application using custom lists, workflows, and a very, very unique visual skin overlaying SharePoint.
- The color coded, icon based, point and click look and feel was written in javascript, html5/css3 and overlayed on top of Microsoft SharePoint 2010, which leveraged Perrigo’s investment and security in the platform.
- Harmonic utilized the new SharePoint Client Side Object Model (CSOM) of REST web services for SharePoint 2010 to achieve a look and feel unlike any other existing SharePoint application.
- The PHDs and multiple, disparate teams, were now able to work through the process for a given project (medicine/drug development and approval), based on color codes, and icons representing any of the more than 250+ deliverables and steps required to bring a new pharmaceutical product to market in the United States.
- Productivity and reporting increased via use of the tool, which is still in use today.
- Harmonic also performed deployment and Perrigo staff training on the tool using a train the trainer approach prior to product launch.
