Project Name: Revenue Protection System (RPS)
Business Objective: After Orbitz.com was initially launched they were experiencing rapid growth – processing 40 to 50k credit card transactions per day, and had over 7500 new accounts per day created on their website. However, Orbitz was losing a significant portion ($5.5 out of $27 million in sales) in credit card fraud each year. A strategic business objective was to detect and dramatically reduce online fraud, resulting in gross margin as well as profit increases.
Solution
Orbitz engaged Harmonic to develop an application which:

- Did not slow down the “booking path” -i.e., the time from initial click to booking of a transaction
- In real time, captured both Orbitz.com user profile and specific transaction information (specifically number of travelers, source/destination airports, number and type of credit cards on file, email addresses, country of origin, etc.) and sent to a fraud rules processing machine for fraud analysis.
- User was allowed to continue to process transaction if it passed the initial fraud test. System contained a flexible business rules engine that allowed Orbitz to create and manage new rules (once hackers figured out the system, the system would adapt and always keep them guessing or not operating smoothly).
- $1.8 million solution saved Orbitz $3.5 million in the first year of deployment.
