Internet of Things (IOT) means internet connectivity and communications data that comes from any non-traditional device, i.e. not a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Examples include “smart appliances”, “smart vending machines”, “remote weather stations”, or essentially remote sensors or meters of any type that report some form of data back to a private server for ultimate end user consumption and analysis. The Internet of Things is an explosion of potential. A water bottle that can remind you to rehydrate on a long workout, flash drive-sized GPS devices to help you find lost keys, phone-controlled power outlets, city trash and recycling bins that can call for pickup when they are full, networked sensors to monitor pollution, evaluate farmers’ fields to enhance crop yields, or provide useful alerts such as warning authorities in Brazil about deforestation through monitors attached to trees.
